Advice On Packing Your Boxes
Below are a few pointers on how to package your belongings, prior to moving them into self storage
- Gather together all the packaging items (boxes, tape & bubble wrap) you think you might need – you can always purchase more from your local storage centre should you need to
- Decide what is going into storage & what isn’t
- Pack any non-essential items first
- Pack heavy items into the smallest box possible to make moving them much easier
- Make sure your boxes are full if they are being stacked, either during transportation or whilst in storage - this will prevent them from potentially collapsing
- Label your boxes – sounds obvious but is essential!
- Make sure your boxes are properly sealed to prevent anything escaping during transportation
- As much as possible, keep items from the same room together - this makes life much easier when you eventually unpack
- Use bubble wrap, rather than paper, to wrap glass or ceramics to prevent any scratches
- Fill any voids within your boxes to prevent fragile items from moving while in transit –potholes and speed bumps on the roads need to be taken into account!
- Dismantle any furniture which can be taken apart – this saves space during transportation & storage, as well as making items easier to move
- Use small clear bags (freezer bags are ideal) for the component parts of any dismantled furniture - remember to label them!
- Use wardrobe boxes to store items of clothing which need particular care, such as evening dresses or suits – a wardrobe box will hold approx 2Ft of wardrobe space
- For other items of clothing being packed into boxes or suitcases - roll rather than fold items to minimise creases
- When packing electrical items, try as much as possible to use their original packaging
- If any electrical devices use ink or toner cartridges, remove them prior to packing – make sure the cartridge itself is kept upright to avoid any spillage
Happy Packing!
