Solar Energy & Self Storage
24/06/2010

With the summer the UK has experienced so far this year, it is evident that there is climate change on the cards.  Some put this down to heightened pollution via the consumption of fossil fuels, polluting the atmosphere and causing Global Warming.  Others would argue that for millions of years the earth’s temperature and weather systems have been going through periodic changes for millions of years with the ice-age being a prime example.  Either way the fuel we all use to go about our daily lives is finite and will run out in the [grand scheme of things] not too distant future.  Many businesses, and some homes, have begun to generate their own power though various ways; one of the most popular being solar energy.

Solar energy is created by means of 3 components: modules (solar panels), an inverter and a service panel, numbers of each component are determined by size and type of system used.  The solar panel collects sunlight and creates a DC (direct current). Transported to an inverter, the DC is converted to an AC (alternating current) which is then fed to the grid which supplies the service panel.  This process allows the entity to operate on the renewable energy source.

Self storage facilities lend themselves to the installation of solar panels to create their own energy due to their sheer size.  Regardless of the total square footage associated with a self storage facility, generally the foot print, and therefore the roof of the building, is substantial enough to allow for the installation of a sufficient solar panel system to provide the entire facility with electricity.

There are several reasons why the utility costs for self storage centres are so high and these are largely determined where in the world a centre is located.  In the UK the weather obviously plays a part with regards to lighting and heating.  Regardless of geographical location, security measures also require electricity.  24 hr digital CCTV and security systems need to be running continually, despite newer designs ensuring increased efficiency, electricity is still a requirement.

Self storage centres in the UK, regardless of popular belief surrounding the weather in this country could potentially benefit from the installation of solar panels and renewable energy retrieval systems.  The initial installation costs of these systems could be off-set against the savings made from not having to pay standing and unit charges to an energy supplier over a relatively few number of years.
