FEDESSA’s 2010 conference in Berlin
Today & tomorrow sees Berlin host this year’s European self storage conference operated by FEDESSA (The Federation of European Self Storage Associations) at the Estrel Hotel & Convention Centre, situated on the outskirts of Berlin. Run over 2 days, the conference is attended by all the members of each constituent country’s self storage association and the latest industry innovations are discussed through various events taking place, with a few fun things thrown in for good measure!
The UK is represented by the members of the SSA UK (The Self Storage Association UK) which has been running since 2004. The SSA’s role is to provide support and advice to not only self storage operators but also their suppliers, as well as promoting industry best practice. Given that the self storage industry in the UK has grown significantly (by nearly 15%) over the past 5-10 years, despite the current economic climate, it provides employment for over 2700 people so its standing as a professional body is very much warranted.
The SSA is the universal voice for self storage industry professionals throughout the UK and the FEDESSA replicates this throughout Europe as a whole. Over the 2 day conference in Berlin there are a number of guest speakers, mini seminars, and of course the Trade Show arena where all of the big (and not so big) players of the industry in Europe showcase their innovations and network on a large scale.
Guest speakers over the 2 days include;
• M. Anne Ballard - Universal Management Company
• Roger Martin-Fagg - Economist turned strategist
• Professor Richard Scase - Studies socio-demographic trends
• Ian Cruickshank Dragon, UK & Europe – Return on internet
• Jonathon Perrins – Self Storage in Asia & investment opportunities
As well as these speakers bringing useful insights into the newest areas of growth, investment and novel industry expansion ideas, there are “fun” aspects associated with the trade show & conference to enable the visiting members a light reprieve. There is a Partners Tour of Potsdam (the capital of Brandenburg), a bus tour of Berlin, lunches over the 2 days, a drinks reception and last, but by no means least, the annual dinner & awards ceremony. It can therefore be concluded that at the end of the conference there will not only be a vast amount of knowledge gathered by individual SSA/FEDESSA members but there will also likely be a few sore heads at Berlin Airport on Friday morning!
