Century-old Egyptian Mill to become ‘Aladdin’s cave’

Revival of Egyptian Mill, Bolton
Egyptian Mill, on Slater Street, Bolton has been revived as a self storage centre. Its new owners, Alligator Storage, say the historic mill will become an “Aladdin’s cave”, as storage rooms are utilised for all manner of reasons.
The mill, last year earmarked for an Islamic girl’s boarding school, has in the end been turned into a self storage facility by the Alligator Self Storage Group.
Built in 1861, the 5 storey building was a working mill until 1960, but was put up for sale by its previous owners when it became surplus to their requirements; they attempted to sell it on as a residential development, which proved to be unviable.
The Egyptian Mill building is Alligator’s first unit in the North West.
Alister Jack, Alligator Chief Executive, said:
“Self storage businesses are a veritable Aladdin’s cave. You would be surprised at the diversity of uses storage rooms are put to.
“We anticipate all sorts of businesses will make use of the space, from builders and plumbers using it as a lock-up, to lawyers and accountants using it for archive space.”
With Egyptian Mill’s new lease of life as a self storage centre, the site will continue to thrive and be part of the area’s economic history and skyline for years to come.
