Choosing Self Storage in Birmingham

Posted October 11 2011 in General Storage

Birmingham, known as UK’s “second city” has lagged behind much of the South East of Britain, where the provision of self storage is concerned.  It has only been in the last 3 years that purpose-built storage facilities have been developed in the Birmingham area.  Due to this recent influx of self storage provision, the consumer now has a choice of operators to be aware of.  Here, we hope to enable the consumer to make an educated decision when choosing a self storage operator in Birmingham

Location of Storage Centre

One of the common key drivers for choosing a self storage centre is a convenient location.  Convenience does not only mean in close proximity to your business or home: is it easy to get in and out of, and can delivery drivers and removal men find it with ease?  Higher quality storage centres tend to be on main arterial routes in and out of the city such as; the A45 to the East of the city and the A41 Black Country New Road, to the West of the city.  An obvious temptation is to use operators in the city centre itself: this can prove difficult when accessing the storage centre through city centre congestion.

Secure Storage

When putting belongings into a storage unit one aspect to consider is security.  Clearly this can be driven by location and if the centre is located in a rundown area it is marginally more likely to have security problems.  However, security is also a function of investment by the storage operator.  A modern, professional storage centre will have:

  • A comprehensive CCTV system
  • Personal Identification System (PIN) for access
  • A sophisticated digital alarm system, and most importantly
  • Good security procedures which are well understood and carried out by conscientious staff - a good way to measure security levels is to see how comprehensive and thorough the checking in a checking out procedure is for all customers.

Dry, Clean & Modern

This is a simple matter of common sense.  When you visit the centre you will be able to tell very quickly if the centre is dry and clean.  The effect of this is to ensure that your belongings will be well looked after while they are in storage.

Value for Money Self Storage

Finally one has to consider the “cost” of self storage to allow budget plans to be put in place.  All operators price self storage in different ways, with most offering some form of initial discount.  The key is to establish how much space (approximately) you require and then make sure the facilities provided by your chosen operator will ensure your belongings are safe.  The price that you will pay will then depend on the length of time you need the storage for and the amount of space that you require.
