Anyone who has emigrated to the United Kingdom are sure to have been warned of the terrible weather, and "the summer that has no sun," but 2011 looks like being a pleasant surprise for any recent arrival to the UK. Since arriving from New Zealand three months ago there has barely been a drop of rain: instead of seeing jackets and umbrellas, it’s been shorts and sunglasses. The thought of making my daily journey to work in Camden with an umbrella has not materialised and the weather has been that good, a walk home from work has become mandatory.
My daily walk home from Alligator's storage centre in Camden takes me through Regents Park, a great spot for anyone to enjoy the sun and take in the beautiful surrounds. Thanks to the great weather and what experts are calling the hottest spring on record, Regents Park is sure to be full of people from all over central London. Temperatures of over 20 degrees are encouraging workers and students to venture outside, on any one day you can expect to see flocks of people letting the sun warm their skin. Of course, all this fine weather means great news for local businesses in Camden. Any pub that can offer an outdoor area is sure to draw a larger than normal crowd and local supermarkets are also noticing an increase in business with many people choosing to pick up food and drink for a picnic with friends and family. The weather at times has been so good in central London that it is more common to see people in bikinis and shorts than boots and raincoats.
Another great discovery during my time spent in London is a day out to Camden Market. Camden’s most famous attraction is a must do on a rainy day, let alone a sunny one. You can expect to see large crowds if you venture there on a Saturday or Sunday when the weather is fine. On my most recent visit to the Camden market, I went with the intention to purchase a new sweater however ended up leaving with a pair of sunglasses and a sun hat! Camden market is great for a bargain and also offer some great food at reasonable prices. With the brilliant weather it was near impossible to get an outdoor seat to enjoy the wide range of food and enjoying a beer outdoors involved a long wait, but it was all worth it in the end.
So…to anyone who says that the UK weather is rubbish needs to spend some time in Camden to enjoy the current run of great weather and the attractions that are on offer. The best thing about it is that it is not even summer yet!
