Many people liken storage units to The Tardis; Dr Who’s time machine and spacecraft. The Tardis is famous for having an interior capacity much greater than its exterior appearance. The Tardis had a ‘chameleon circuit’, which enables it to match its surroundings; whether a statue in Rome, or a boat in a dock, the Tardis could blend in with its surroundings. However, the chameleon circuit was broken, leaving the Tardis forever disguised as a 1950’s style London Police box. The Tardis’ faulty nature is the centre of Dr Who’s adventures, as it often ends up slightly off its planned course, which – in space – is a slightly bigger issue than taking a wrong turning in a busy London street
When Dr Who aired in 1963, police boxes were still extremely popular in London, making it an authentic disguise at the time. The prop department have failed to keep consistency with the design; initially made from wood, then later fiberglass. It has been recreated time and time again after damages, and each time it changes slightly. This was even mocked in an episode, when it was exclaimed “This isn’t even a real police box… the telephone is a dummy and the windows are the wrong sizes”.
“Tardis” is a type of craft, and stands for “Time And Relative Dimension In Space”. The shape of police boxes has become innately associated with the Tardis. Similarly, in British Popular culture, anything that seems bigger on the inside than it appears on the outside is often compared to the Tardis.
Self storage is one concept that could fit this description. One of the most important things when renting a self storage unit is to make sure the sizing is correct. Many customers incorrectly-estimate the size they need and find, once their belongings are in, the space is often a lot bigger than it looks. Estimating the size of storage space needed is often hindered by the fact that the items that need to be stored are still in their spaces throughout the home: the sofa is in the living room, the crockery is still in the kitchen cupboards and the contents of the attic hasn’t even been thought about!
As a result of this, staff within self storage centres are highly trained to help their customers deal with this type of dilemma and have lots of hints & tips to make sure the space is fully utilised and all the items fit into the smallest space possible. They also understand that storage requirements can change quite drastically between booking the space and physically moving items in; more often than not he space eventually taken can be changed to suit your needs at the time.
