Last week, Bolton Council’s planning committee agreed to give the go ahead to Cream Mills owners, Westgate Estates to convert the historic building into luxury residential properties. 72 houses and 23 apartments will be developed on the old mill site, providing high specification 2 bed apartments and 3-4 bed homes for the Bolton area. A percentage of these properties have also been earmarked for rental by a social landlord to provide affordable housing opportunities in the area.
The site on Mytham Road has been a blot on the landscape of the area and has been falling into disrepair since its closure in 2004. The proposal to transform the old paper mill has been welcomed by many, being viewed as a boost for the local economy. Lyndon Monks, of Westgate Estates, said: “We are ecstatic it’s got the go ahead. We’ve worked closely with the council to come up with this scheme. It will transform the whole area. We’re not building standard houses, these will be high quality homes in a fantastic setting.”
Mills are one thing Bolton has a variety of: approximately 100 to be closer to the point. The number of mills found in Bolton is a direct result of the town’s influence and importance during the industrial revolution. Long gone are the days of the vast cotton mills which used to be the hub of the UK textile industry: most mills have been converted into warehouses for commercial use and residential accommodation.
Egyptian Mill on Egyptian Street in Bolton is a prime example of how an old mill can be developed to provide a multitude of business space solutions, as well as self storage facilities for domestic use. Built in 1851, the mill was owned and operated by John Knowles & Son who took over the building in 1880. Functioning as a fully working cotton mill until 1960, the mill was then used as a large warehousing facility until the mid 1980s. After a brief spell in operation again, the building was turned into a store.
After a short period of being empty, Egyptian Mill was purchased in 2010 by Alligator Self Storage who set about re-developing the building to provide a variety of space solutions. The potential of the building has been realised since the transformation began and now provides the following services:
Tenants can rent any combination of the different types of space provided depending on each individual’s specific requirements. The variety of services being provided at Egyptian Mill, Bolton is only possible due to the effective use of space such a building has to offer. Retaining the structure and outside appearance of the building has been a priority throughout the development of the Bolton site: these red-bricked buildings are part of Bolton’s commercial and social identity.
