Portsmouth has long been a centre of industry and boasts the title of being the UK’s only island city. For centuries, Portsmouth has also been a major naval port and is also home to the world’s oldest dry dock. Although military and maritime operations are not what they used to be, Portsmouth remains a major dockyard and base to both the Royal Navy and the Royal Marine Commandos.
With such a strong history and connection with all things maritime, Portsmouth’s nickname “Pompey” is derived from entries made into a Ship’s log when entering Portsmouth Harbour: “Pom. P” was used as an abbreviation for “Portsmouth Point” and is still used in official navigational charts today.
Due to the decline in both private shipping and military operations, Portsmouth has been suffering in a state of decline for a number of years. There are many more factors influencing the prosperity of the area but the current economic climate in the UK is certainly not helping. However, news released today would implicate a possible turn of events for the city.
Potentially providing a boost for Portsmouth and the surrounding area, plans for the long awaited regeneration of “the gateway to Portsmouth” are being discussed at a council meeting today. The clean-up and development of the Tipner area would include:
The new motorway junction has already been agreed and will cost approximately £30 million, with the rest of the proposed items expected to cost in the region of £130 million. Although expectations are such that there should be little to prevent planning applications being granted to these project, tensions are still high. The magnitude of benefits a project like this would bring to an area such as Portsmouth are so great, the council will be doing everything they can to ensure the development goes ahead without too many glitches.
The implications on the local economy due to the influx of jobs, and people, to the area will create demand for services such as removals and self storage. With so many new homes being built, more people with be moving within, and to the area. Utilising a self storage facility can dramatically reduce the stress levels involved in moving home, allowing individuals and families more time to get things organised.
Self storage can also be used by the many trades people who will be working in the area during the redevelopment and construction phases: having somewhere safe and secure to store any tools and equipment provides peace of mind. Hopefully plans will be granted permission and the regeneration of Portsmouth can begin sooner rather than later.
