As with most things in life, first impressions count and can only be made once. Making a good first impression, regardless of the situation, is crucial to establishing a positive reaction: in the business world this means future sales. Self storage is no different; in some cases it is extremely important if someone is storing their precious worldly belongings.
Different people use self storage for different reasons but there is one factor which is applicable to every decision to rent a self storage room: peace of mind. The “peace of mind” element can be created by a self storage centre in many ways, levels of security on site is just one example. A customer’s first impression of a self storage facility is more often than not determined by what they actually see when they arrive on site.
Generally there is some form of communication between a storage facility and the customer prior to any items being moved-in to the rented room. Whether the communication has been digitally via the company’s website and emails, or verbally over the phone, a positive picture will have been painted of the storage facility and the services they have to offer. A preconceived opinion has begun to form in the customer’s mind as to what to expect when they arrive with the removal man and a van load of furniture and belongings: this can all be put to waste if the storage centre is untidy and unclean.
The level of housekeeping at a storage centre is often a direct reflection of the standard of management within the centre itself. If there is rubbish lying around and the site appears run-down, customers have every right to question the suitability of the facility to provide them with quality self storage services.
However, in light of the strike action last week, highlighted by Jeremy Clarkson on the BBC’s One Show, situations concerning public sector action can have a direct detrimental effect on private sector businesses. Many businesses that rely on public services could have potentially suffered loss of business and adverse first impressions through no fault of their own, such as refuse collections not being made.
Thankfully this situation never actually materialised but it goes to show the domino effect of public sector activities on the private sector businesses. This is especially apparent in the current economic climate where every business, self storage operators included are doing everything within their power to remain a step ahead of the competition. Attempting to create a positive first impression on customers is often difficult as it is without the added hindrance of strike action being taken by those with a duty of care to the general public as a whole.
